This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Current or prior VA service/experience is preferred. Fully trained pathologist, board certified Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology. Additional board certification is also preferred. Candidates must be Board Certified, Research background, Presentation and Speak at scientific meetings on a national and international level. Strong interest and/or experience in the clinical laboratory with a willingness to be actively involved in clinical laboratory operations and special projects is essential. Will provide Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology case review/reporting, autopsy procedures/reporting, and attend the principal tumor boards. Will participate in teaching, research, and clinical activities. The Anatomic Pathology Section includes Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, Dermatopathology, Hematopathology, Autopsy, Histology lab, and Immunohistochemistry lab. The Clinical Pathology Division includes Blood Bank, Chemistry and Toxicology, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Phlebotomy, Point of Care testing, Urinalysis, and Send-out testing and may follow in-house on Flow Cytometry. The Service performs 3,000,000+ tests per year and is accredited by the CLIA, the AABB and the FDA. The Anatomic Pathology Division accessions approximately 6,000 surgical pathology specimens and bone marrow specimens, 1,500 cytology specimens, and some autopsy per year. Incumbent is qualified by virtue of documented training, expertise, and experience to assume professional, scientific, consultative, organizational, administrative, educational, and clinical research responsibilities for the service. Incumbent is responsible for directing and coordinating functions of the service based on the mission, special needs, and size of the facility; functions are diverse and encompass patient care, administration, education, and research. Technical duties include but are not limited to: o Incumbent makes judgments about the medical significance of clinical lab data and communicates effectively in interpreting and correlating lab data to providers; provides consultation to clinicians when appropriate.\no Responsible for P&LMS representation on committees such as Tumor Conference, Transfusion Review, Inpatient Care Board, Ancillary Testing, etc.; provides for expert consultation for transfusion related problems.\no Diagnosis of surgical and cytologic specimens; interact to provide expert consultative services to providers on follow-up case material.\no Perform and provide diagnosis on specimens obtained by fine-needle aspiration.\no Perform gross and microscopic examination of tissue and cytologic material and provide reports in a timely manner; perform post-mortem examinations and ensures subsequent provisional and final reports are completed timely.\no Ensure a quality improvement program is well defined, effectively implemented, and monitored to provide continuous improvements and cost-effective operations in the service.\no Ensure the selection of all outside referral labs is made to provide quality of testing and cost efficiencies.\no Ensure the maintenance of comprehensive quality control, proficiency testing, and peer review programs to meet accrediting agency requirement.
