Position Summary The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine educates aspiring physicians to be justice-minded, global citizens using a community-based, distributed model of education, which fosters inclusion, discovery, and innovation. The UIWSOM invites applications for the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.
The Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs reports to the Dean and assists in providing leadership, oversight, and management of UIWSOM within the policies and guidelines of the University of the Incarnate Word and the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine.
This position is considered a “Responsible Employee” under Title IX federal regulations and “Mandatory Reporter” under Texas state law and The UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about violating Title IX.
At the directive of the Dean, the Senior Associate Dean will:
Serve as a member of the Dean’s Leadership Council which serves to advise the Dean on UIWSOM operations;
Develop and lead a team of senior educators, each of whom is administratively responsible for a significant area of the educational mission, including the DO, MBS, and MPH programs;
Lead the continued development, improvement, and implementation of the UIWSOM DO curriculum model which has been established, following UIWSOM curriculum guiding principles;
Develop and oversee the annual budget for units under direct supervision, and assist the Dean in the development of plans for allocation and reallocation of funds, positions, and assurance of budget efficiencies within Academic Affairs;
Assist the Dean in evaluating UIWSOM metrics and developing appropriate responses to issues derived from the resulting analysis;
Work closely and collaboratively with curriculum leaders, assistant and associate deans, faculty, and staff in their various leadership and managerial roles involving members of the UIWSOM learning community, by enhancing communications, providing information and guidance on policies, ensuring shared faculty governance, and advancing the UIWSOM mission;
Strengthen partnerships with affiliate institutions and community physicians to benefit the educational mission;
Be responsible for the maintenance and updating of undergraduate medical education (UME) policies and procedures;
Supervise the Office of Medical & Interprofessional Education, Office of Clinical Affairs, Department of Clinical and Applied Science Education (CASE), and the Office of Faculty Affairs, and evaluating the leaders of those units;
Collaborate with the UIW Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness to ensure that UIWSOM exceeds all academic accreditation requirements and fulfills the strategic plan initiatives related to academic affairs;
Qualify for an appointment as Associate or Full Professor to the UIWSOM Faculty, S/He may have some teaching, research, and service responsibilities in addition to the administrative role;
Represent the Dean at various UIW, UIWSOM, and community events if the Dean is unable to attend;
Keep the Dean informed of activities within the Academic Affairs unit effectively and in a timely manner; and
Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities A strong track record as an educational scholar and superior clinician-educator, the candidate will:
Be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor;
Have a demonstrated commitment to promoting social mission in medical education;
Have significant administrative and leadership experience in medical education programming and development; involvement in unique, innovative, and alternative methods for teaching;
Have the ability to embrace and champion adult learner-centered education within a new medical school with growing research and community outreach and among a wide range of external constituencies;
Be a recognized presence in medical education organizations;
Will have experience in strategic planning;
Will have fiscal experience in terms of developing and monitoring the budget and resources for the UME division;
Will have demonstrated cultural sensitivity, commitment to promoting diversity, and the ability to bring people together to achieve a worthwhile mission;
Will have demonstrated commitment to community and campus alliances and interpersonal professional relationships;
Will have skills that must include organizing and managing human resources and conflict resolution; and
Will have the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. The employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA
Required Education Earned DO degree from a COCA-accredited osteopathic medical school
Required Work Experience A minimum of three (3) years of decanal experience and five (5) years of academic leadership in an osteopathic or allopathic medical school.

Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
Possess an unrestricted Texas medical license free of disciplinary actions/sanctions or ability to obtain Texas license within one year of employment..
Board certification in specialty recognized by the AOA or ABMS
Work Hours Hours may vary and often include attendance at events and meetings evenings and weekends. Usual office hours are from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. Travel required mostly in the central and south Texas region; occasional travel to conferences in the US.
