The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School seeks an innovative and accomplished leader to serve as its next Vice Dean for Academics and Chair for the Department of Medical Education. This is an unparalleled opportunity to help the school revolutionize how people get and stay healthy. The Vice Dean oversees all aspects of medical education spanning undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education for the school, as well as student and faculty affairs.
As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation’s leading research universities, the Dell Medical School, with a commitment to advance health equity and diversity in medicine, pursues innovation in the redesign of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education. It is the fifth medical school in the UT System and the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. An extraordinary commitment of resources, both public and private, has already been made to enable the development and success of the Dell Medical School. The school is partnering closely with the community and regional healthcare providers and payers to provide new models for health promotion, healthcare delivery, and clinical care for the community’s underserved population. Fully accredited by the LCME, Dell Medical School graduated its first class earlier this year. The school matriculates 50 students per year and sponsors 13 residency and 12 fellowship programs.
The incoming Vice Dean will lead efforts to build upon a groundbreaking curriculum, propel graduate and continuing medical programs of excellence, and enhance educational research and faculty development programs. The Vice Dean reports directly to the Dean and serves as part of the executive leadership team as the head of the education pillar for the medical school.
Applicants must have an MD or relevant terminal degree (PhD/EdD), a substantial record of leadership and achievement in academic medicine, and be eligible for a tenured, professor rank. Board certification is required for those intending to practice clinically. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of innovation in medical education, facilitating cross disciplinary connections to advance medical education, and a history of medical education research and extramural funding in support of medical education. Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to and experience with excellence in diversity and inclusion in education, clinical settings, research, and/or community service. The Dell Medical School is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity and excellence within the learning health system.
