The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM), in Las Cruces, New Mexico invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean and Chief Academic Officer. The Dean will be responsible for academic management of the BCOM and its full range of programs and initiatives. This search is the result of the planned and upcoming retirement of BCOM’s current Dean & Chief Academic Officer following the graduation of BCOM’s inaugural class in May of 2020.
Reporting to the President, the chosen academic executive will be expected to embrace and support BCOM’s mission, foster academic excellence, create an environment of open communication and engaged governance with the faculty. As a developing medical college, the Dean will be responsible for its progress and growth as it pursues regional accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission and the eventual expansion into a health science university offering new health related degree-granting programs.
The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine seeks a leader with integrity and a proven record of successful leadership, orchestrating well-planned growth in academic programs, accomplishments in garnering financial support, strong fiscal management skills, and collaborative leadership style. The Dean will embrace BCOM’s mission and lead and understand the College’s impact within the field of osteopathic medicine and the communities in which it serves.
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of the skills necessary for the practice of osteopathic medicine in an evolving profession and provide effective leadership in the College’s administration of its degree program.
As required by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) , the Dean must hold an earned DO degree from a COCA-accredited college of osteopathic medicine, an unrestricted medical license at some time in his/her career (free of disciplinary actions or sanctions while licensed), AOA or ABMS board certification at some time in his or her career, and at least five years of proven experience within the last ten years in academic leadership roles that includes budget management authority.

Final selection is made by BCOM’s president in consultation with the Board of Trustees. The Dean & Chief Academic officer is expected to begin their service in July of 2020 or before.

Although the BCOM is freestanding, privately funded, separately licensed and independently operated college that is not a part of New Mexico State University (NMSU), it is very closely affiliated with NMSU. Through its innovative public-private partnership with NMSU, BCOM’s students have access to many NMSU facilities and services, such as library study spaces, athletics, intramural sports, some health services and recreational facilities. BCOM’s faculty have the opportunity to receive faculty appointments and engage in joint research initiatives with NMSU.
BCOM’s 80,000 square foot newly constructed building is located at the Arrowhead Research Park on the NMSU campus. Arrowhead Center is focused on entrepreneurship, innovation and economic development. BCOM also occupies 4,500 square feet of laboratory and support space located approximately 15 minutes from the main campus. The BCOM BioScience Research Laboratory (BSRL), a fully equipped BSL-2 facility, functions to support faculty driven research activities with supervised research opportunities for students.
